School Morning Lip Balm
A pocket balm in a tin: coconut oil melts on contact, cocoa butter gives it body and a faint chocolate smell, and a little beeswax stops it turning to soup in a blazer.

You will need
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp cocoa butter
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets
The ritual
- Put the coconut oil, cocoa butter and beeswax into a small heatproof cup.
- Stand the cup in a pan of barely simmering water until everything melts.
- Stir well, then pour into a small clean tin or lip pot.
- Leave it somewhere cool for twenty minutes to set solid.
- Swipe a fingertip over the top and press it onto clean lips.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- Melts at body heat, so the balm softens the moment it touches your lips instead of sitting there as a lump.
- 1 tsp cocoa butter
- Gives the balm body and a faint chocolate smell, and keeps the layer on the lips a bit longer.
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets
- Holds everything solid, so the tin survives a blazer pocket on a warm day rather than leaking through it.
Easy swaps
- 1 tsp coconut oil → sunflower or almond oil, though the balm will end up softer.
- 1 tsp cocoa butter → shea butter, for a balm with no chocolate scent.
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets → candelilla wax at half the amount for a vegan balm.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Six months in a closed tin. Keep it out of a hot car or a sunny windowsill, where it will melt and set grainy.
What to expect — honestly
Chapped lips feel comfortable again and stay that way for an hour or two before you reapply. It is a cover that holds moisture in, not a cure for chapping. Lips that are always sore need a pharmacist's advice rather than reapplying all day.
Common questions
Why does my balm feel gritty?
Cocoa butter goes grainy when it cools slowly. Melt it fully, stir it well, and stand the tin somewhere properly cool so it sets fast rather than sitting warm.
Can I add flavour?
A drop of vanilla extract is fine. Skip essential oils on lips, especially peppermint or citrus, because lip skin is thin and they sting more than they are worth.
