Hemp Seed Lip Pot
A pocket balm with a green-brown cast: hemp seed oil brings the softness, beeswax sets it firm enough for a coat pocket, and cocoa powder warms both colour and smell.

You will need
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles
- 1/4 tsp cocoa powder
The ritual
- Melt the beeswax pastilles in a heatproof bowl set over hot water.
- Stir in the hemp seed oil and warm until the mixture is clear.
- Sift in the cocoa powder and whisk hard so it does not clump.
- Pour into a small tin and leave thirty minutes to set firm.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil
- Hemp seed oil is light and sinks in quickly, which is what keeps this balm from feeling like a wax plug.
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles
- Beeswax sets the oil into a solid you can carry, and leaves a light film that stays put in cold wind.
- 1/4 tsp cocoa powder
- Cocoa gives the pot its warm brown cast and a faint chocolate smell that covers the grassiness of the hemp.
Easy swaps
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil → sweet almond oil, milder-smelling and easier to find.
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles → candelilla wax, using about half as much.
- 1/4 tsp cocoa powder → carob powder, for a gentler colour and no chocolate note.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps six months in a closed tin at room temperature. There is no water in it, so it stays put; keep it out of direct sun.
What to expect — honestly
A firm, long-lasting balm that keeps lips comfortable through a cold walk and needs redoing less often than a thin gloss. The colour is barely there. It is cover against the weather, not a fix for lips that are already split.
Common questions
Does hemp seed oil smell grassy?
A little, yes. The cocoa covers most of it, and a fresher bottle smells far milder than one that has been open for months.
Will the cocoa show as colour?
Only as a faint warm tint, more felt than seen. Add another pinch if you want it visible, but sift it or the balm turns gritty.
