Beach Day Salt Spray
A texture spray for hair: sea salt gives the gritty hold, aloe vera gel keeps it from going crunchy, and half a teaspoon of coconut oil softens the ends.

You will need
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tsp fine sea salt
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil
The ritual
- Dissolve the sea salt in the warm water, stirring until no grains remain.
- Melt the coconut oil and whisk it in while the water is still warm.
- Stir in the aloe vera gel and pour into a spray bottle.
- Cool for twenty minutes and shake hard before every use.
- Spray onto damp hair, scrunch the mid-lengths, and let it dry naturally.
Why these ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- Warm water dissolves the salt properly, which matters: undissolved grains end up sitting visibly on the hair.
- 1 tsp fine sea salt
- Salt is what makes the texture, roughing the hair surface slightly so it grips itself into loose waves.
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- Aloe softens the hold, so hair looks tousled rather than stiff, and it makes the spray feel less drying.
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil
- A tiny amount of oil keeps the ends from going straw-like, and stops the spray reading as pure salt water.
Easy swaps
- 1 cup warm water → warm brewed green tea, for a little more hold.
- 1 tsp fine sea salt → Epsom salts, which give a softer, less gritty texture.
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel → a teaspoon of conditioner, whisked in thoroughly.
- 1/2 tsp coconut oil → argan or jojoba oil, neither of which needs melting.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps a month in a spray bottle at room temperature. Salt water is fairly stable, but rinse the bottle out between batches.
What to expect — honestly
Hair dries with more grip and looser waves than it would on its own, and holds the shape until you wash it. Fine hair takes to it better than thick. It is texture and not curl, and straight hair will not turn wavy from a spray.
Common questions
Will it dry my hair out?
Used every day, yes. Salt pulls water out of the hair shaft, which is exactly what gives the texture, so keep it for the days you want it.
Mine went crunchy.
Too much salt, or you sprayed dry hair. Halve the salt, add another half teaspoon of coconut oil, and scrunch while the hair is still damp.
