You will need

The ritual

  1. Mash the sugar, honey and coconut oil into a thick, spoonable paste.
  2. Stir in the beetroot juice a few drops at a time until evenly pink.
  3. Dab a pea sized amount onto damp lips with a fingertip.
  4. Rub in slow, light circles for no more than thirty seconds.
  5. Wipe off with a damp cloth and follow with balm straight away.
Glow tip ✦ Use the finest sugar you can find and almost no pressure, because lip skin is thin and hard scrubbing leaves it sore rather than smooth.

Why these ingredients

1 tsp fine sugar
The exfoliant. Fine crystals dissolve as you work, so the scrub loses its bite before you have had a chance to overdo it.
1/2 tsp beetroot juice
Pure colour. It gives lips a soft pink flush for an hour or so and does nothing else at all.
1/2 tsp honey
Binds the sugar and keeps the paste tacky enough to stay on your lips instead of dropping into the sink.
1/2 tsp coconut oil
Provides slip so the sugar rolls rather than drags, and leaves a light film once you have wiped the rest away.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Keeps five days in a tiny lidded pot in the fridge. Beetroot juice is fresh produce, so bin it the moment it smells at all off.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your inner wrist first. Lips only, not the skin around them, and never on cracked, split or cold sore affected lips. Skip it entirely if your lips are already raw, and stop if it stings at all.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Lips look smoother and take lipstick far more evenly straight afterwards, with a faint pink flush that fades within a couple of hours. It handles surface flakes and nothing deeper. Chronically chapped lips need a plain balm used often, not more scrubbing.

Common questions

How long does the pink last?

An hour or two on most people, less once you eat or drink. It is a tint sitting on freshly polished lips, not a stain that soaks in.

Can I use it every day?

Once or twice a week is enough. Daily scrubbing keeps lips stuck in a flaking cycle, since you keep removing skin that has not finished settling.
