Multani Mitti Oil Control Mask

Fuller's earth soaks up surface oil as it dries, rosewater loosens it into a spreadable clay, and aloe with honey stops the mask setting hard enough to feel tight.

Multani Mitti Oil Control Mask — homemade face mask ingredients styled for the recipe

You will need

The ritual

  1. Whisk the clay and rosewater in a non-metal bowl until lump-free.
  2. Stir in the aloe vera gel and honey to soften the mix.
  3. Brush a thin, even layer over clean skin, avoiding the eye area and lips.
  4. Leave ten minutes, no longer, and stop before it cracks.
  5. Soften with a damp cloth and rinse with lukewarm water.
Glow tip ✦ Take it off while it is still slightly tacky; a fully dried clay mask pulls at the skin and leaves it feeling tighter than when you started.

Why these ingredients

2 tbsp multani mitti (fuller's earth)
A very absorbent clay that draws surface oil off the skin as it dries, leaving a matte finish for a few hours.
2 tbsp rosewater
Turns the powder into a mask instead of a dust, and gives it a light scent without adding any oil.
1 tsp aloe vera gel
Slows the drying so the clay stays flexible and does not tighten uncomfortably across your cheeks and jaw.
1/2 tsp honey
A small amount of stickiness keeps the mask soft and leaves skin feeling supple rather than squeaky afterwards.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Single use. The dry clay keeps indefinitely in a jar, but mix only what you need each time.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test along your jaw a day ahead, especially for the honey. Clay masks can leave dry or sensitive skin feeling stripped, so use a thinner layer and less time if that sounds like you. Keep it out of your eyes and rinse well if it stings.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Skin looks matte and feels cool and clean for the rest of the evening. This is oil taken off the surface, not a change in how much your skin makes, and the shine is back by morning. Persistent breakouts need proper medical advice, not a clay mask.

Common questions

Will it shrink my pores?

No, pore size is fixed. Clearing surface oil and settling the skin means pores catch less shadow, so they look a little smaller for a few hours.

Can I use it every day?

Once or twice a week is enough. Daily clay strips oily skin so thoroughly that it often comes back oilier, and the texture feels rough as well.
