Vaseline Rose Slugging Balm
A last-step occlusive: petroleum jelly seals in whatever you applied first, rosehip oil keeps it from feeling like candle wax, and a drop of rose makes it worth wearing.

You will need
- 1 tbsp petroleum jelly
- 1 tsp rosehip oil
- 2 drops rose absolute
- 1/4 tsp honey
The ritual
- Warm the petroleum jelly in a small bowl set over hot water until soft.
- Stir in the rosehip oil and honey until the mix is smooth and glossy.
- Take it off the heat, add the rose absolute and stir again.
- Pot it up and let it set at room temperature for an hour.
- At bedtime, press a thin film over damp moisturised skin, avoiding the eye area.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tbsp petroleum jelly
- The seal. It slows water leaving the skin overnight, which is why the surface feels softer and looks smoother by morning.
- 1 tsp rosehip oil
- Thins the jelly so it spreads without dragging, and gives a lighter, less waxy feel on the face.
- 2 drops rose absolute
- Scent only, at well under one percent. It turns a functional balm into something you will actually reach for at night.
- 1/4 tsp honey
- A touch of humectant that stops the balm feeling purely greasy and gives it a faint warmth of smell.
Easy swaps
- 1 tbsp petroleum jelly → a beeswax and oil balm if you would rather avoid petroleum jelly.
- 1 tsp rosehip oil → squalane or jojoba oil, both lighter on the face.
- 2 drops rose absolute → geranium oil, or nothing at all for reactive skin.
- 1/4 tsp honey → vegetable glycerin for a vegan version, same quarter teaspoon.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps six months in a clean lidded jar at room temperature. Use a clean spatula rather than fingers, since the honey is the part that can spoil.
What to expect — honestly
You wake with skin that feels cushioned and looks less flaky, and makeup tends to sit better the next morning. The effect lasts until you next wash your face, because this is a layer on top rather than a change in the skin underneath. Nothing here repairs or renews anything.
Common questions
Will slugging clog my skin?
Petroleum jelly does not sink in, so it mostly sits on top. Some people still find their skin looks congested after a few nights, so start with two nights a week.
Can I put it over serum?
That is the whole idea. Damp skin, then your serum or moisturiser, then a thin film of this on top as the final layer.
