Chapped Winter Lip Butter
A thick winter lip butter: shea gives the cushion, castor oil the gloss and the cling, and a quarter teaspoon of beeswax holds it together in a pocket-warm tin.

You will need
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 1 tsp castor oil
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets
The ritual
- Melt the beeswax pellets and shea butter in a bowl over hot water.
- Stir in the castor oil until the mixture runs clear and glossy.
- Pour into a small tin and leave twenty minutes to set.
- Dab it on with a clean fingertip whenever your lips feel tight.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tsp shea butter
- Shea melts at body heat and gives the butter its cushion, which is what makes tight lips feel comfortable again.
- 1 tsp castor oil
- Castor oil is sticky in the useful sense: it stays on the lip far longer than a light oil would.
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets
- A quarter teaspoon is enough to firm the butter into something that keeps its shape in a coat pocket.
Easy swaps
- 1 tsp shea butter → cocoa butter, firmer and a little more chocolatey.
- 1 tsp castor oil → olive oil, less glossy and rather less long-lasting.
- 1/4 tsp beeswax pellets → candelilla wax, using about half the amount.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps six months in a closed tin at room temperature. No water goes into it, so it stays sound; keep it out of a hot car.
What to expect — honestly
Lips feel cushioned straight away and stay comfortable for a couple of hours before you want it again. That is what a balm does. Lips that are already split take days to settle whatever you put on them.
Common questions
Why castor oil rather than another?
Castor is thick and clings, so it stays on the lip through a cold walk. Lighter oils feel nicer going on and disappear far sooner.
Does licking my lips make it worse?
Yes, considerably. Saliva evaporates and takes surface moisture with it, so lips end up drier than before. The butter helps most if you leave it alone.
