You will need

The ritual

  1. Line the bathroom bin with a fresh liner, or use the bath if there is one.
  2. Boil the kettle and steep the tea bags in a little of the hot water.
  3. Let the water stand, then top it up with cold until it is comfortably warm, never hot.
  4. Stir in the Epsom salts and powdered milk, then test the temperature with your wrist.
  5. Soak your feet fifteen minutes, then dry well between the toes.
Glow tip ✦ Test with your wrist rather than your fingers. Fingertips are poor judges of heat after a day of dragging a suitcase about.

Why these ingredients

3 tbsp Epsom salts
Epsom salts dissolve easily in warm water and turn a plain soak into something that feels deliberate rather than improvised.
1 tbsp powdered milk
Milk powder leaves feet feeling softer than salt water alone, which can dry the skin over a long soak.
2 chamomile tea bags
Two bags scent the water gently and turn a hotel bathroom into somewhere you would willingly sit for a quarter of an hour.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Single use, so tip it away afterwards. You can pre-mix the salts and milk powder in a small sealed bag at home and carry that instead.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your inner arm first if your skin reacts easily. Water straight off the boil scalds, so never put your feet into it: let it stand, add cold, and check the temperature before your feet go anywhere near the bowl. If you have diabetes, neuropathy or any reduced sensation in your feet, have someone else check the water for you, and skip this entirely if the skin is broken.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Feet feel less swollen and a great deal more comfortable, and the ritual is a decent way to close a travel day. The comfort lasts the evening. Swelling from a long flight settles overnight on its own regardless, and this only makes the waiting nicer.

Common questions

Is a hotel bin really clean enough?

With a fresh liner, yes. If that still feels wrong, a plugged sink used one foot at a time does much the same job.

What do the Epsom salts actually do?

They make the water feel silkier and give the soak a point. The real work is fifteen minutes of warmth and sitting still.
