Hemp Seed Knuckle Salve
A firm little salve aimed at knuckles: hemp seed oil sinks in quickly, beeswax leaves a layer that survives hand washing, and shea butter gives the tin its body.

You will need
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles
- 1 tsp shea butter
The ritual
- Melt the beeswax and shea butter in a bowl set over barely simmering water.
- Take the bowl off the heat and stir in the hemp seed oil.
- Pour into a small clean tin and leave it undisturbed for thirty minutes.
- Once firm, warm a little on a fingertip and press it into each knuckle.
- Reapply after washing up, when the knuckles feel tightest and driest.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil
- A light, quick-sinking oil that suits knuckles, where a heavier oil would sit on the surface and rub off on your sleeves.
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles
- Sets the salve firm and leaves a thin layer that survives a hand wash, which is the whole point on knuckles.
- 1 tsp shea butter
- Gives the salve body and a soft, buttery feel so it spreads without dragging on skin that is already tight.
Easy swaps
- 1 tbsp hemp seed oil → grapeseed or sunflower oil for a similar light feel.
- 1 tsp beeswax pastilles → candelilla wax at half the amount for a plant-based tin.
- 1 tsp shea butter → cocoa butter, which sets harder, or mango butter for something softer.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps six months in a sealed tin in a cool cupboard. Water is what spoils a salve, so scoop with dry fingers only.
What to expect — honestly
Knuckles feel less papery straight away and stay comfortable through a wash or two, which is the honest measure of a salve. It is a barrier, not a treatment. Skin that is splitting open needs a doctor's eye rather than a tin.
Common questions
Why has mine gone grainy?
Shea butter turns grainy when it cools slowly. Remelt the tin gently, then cool it fast in the fridge for twenty minutes and it will set smooth.
Can I use this on my face?
You can, but it is heavy. On knuckles that thickness is exactly the point, while on the face most people find it sits on top rather than sinking in.
