Witch Hazel Spot Press — homemade facial rituals & serum ingredients styled for the recipe

You will need

The ritual

  1. Stir the witch hazel, cooled boiled water and glycerin together in a small clean dish.
  2. Soak a cotton pad in the liquid and squeeze out the drips.
  3. Press the pad flat on the shiny area and hold it there for two minutes.
  4. Lift it away and let the skin dry on its own, then moisturise as usual.
Glow tip ✦ Press and hold rather than wipe, because dragging a soaked pad across a sore spot does more harm than the liquid does good.

Why these ingredients

1 tbsp alcohol-free witch hazel
A mild plant astringent that gives skin a taut, freshly-wiped feel and takes the shine off an oily patch for a while.
1 tbsp cooled boiled water
Dilutes the witch hazel so a daily press does not leave skin tight, and gives the mix a clean base to start from.
1/4 tsp vegetable glycerin
A humectant that draws a little moisture to the surface, so the press finishes soft instead of squeaky.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Keeps three days in a covered jar in the fridge, then make it fresh.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your inner arm first. Choose a witch hazel labelled alcohol-free, since the distilled kind with alcohol tends to leave skin tight and stinging. Keep it off broken skin and well away from the eyes.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Expect a cool, tightened, matte feel on the area for an hour or two, and a little less visible shine. It will not clear a spot or stop the next one arriving. The effect fades as soon as your skin warms up again.

Common questions

Can I use the witch hazel neat?

You can, but diluting it and adding glycerin makes it far kinder for a daily press. Neat witch hazel used often tends to leave skin feeling papery and tight.

Why cooled boiled water rather than tap water?

Boiling and cooling gives you a cleaner starting point for a mix with no preservative in it, so your three days in the fridge are three genuinely usable days.
