You will need

The ritual

  1. Whisk the sunflower oil and aloe vera gel together in a small bowl.
  2. Add the lavender essential oil and whisk again until evenly blended.
  3. Pour into a small dropper bottle and shake before every use.
  4. Warm two drops between your palms and stroke through the ends only.
  5. Plait or tie the hair while the ends are still slightly damp.
Glow tip ✦ Two drops is genuinely enough. Start at the very ends and work up no further than your ears, or the roots go flat by lunchtime.

Why these ingredients

1 tbsp sunflower oil
Sunflower oil is light and cheap, and it coats the outside of the hair without the weight of a heavier oil.
1 tsp aloe vera gel
Aloe cuts the greasiness, so a few drops spread further and the ends feel smooth rather than oiled.
2 drops lavender essential oil
Two drops in a tablespoon is a gentle scent rather than a treatment, and it keeps the serum from smelling like a salad.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Keeps three months in a dark dropper bottle at room temperature. Shake before use, since the aloe and the oil separate as they sit.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test behind the ear first. Lavender oil at this dilution is mild, but leave it out for young children and check with your midwife or doctor if you are pregnant. Keep it away from the eyes and out of reach of children.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Ends look smoother and less frizzy, and they tangle less when you comb them. It lasts until you next wash your hair. Split ends stay split, and only scissors change that.

Common questions

Will it make my hair greasy?

Not if you keep to the ends and to two drops. Fine hair does better with one drop rubbed almost entirely into the palms first.

Does it mend split ends?

No. Nothing in a bottle rejoins a split hair. It smooths the ends so they catch the light and tangle less until the next wash.
