Cocoa Butter Lotion Bar
Cocoa butter and beeswax set into a solid bar that melts on contact, while sunflower oil keeps it soft enough to glide over rough elbows instead of dragging.

You will need
- 1 tbsp cocoa butter
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil
The ritual
- Put all three ingredients in a heatproof bowl set over barely simmering water.
- Stir gently until everything has melted into one clear golden liquid.
- Pour into a small silicone mould or a clean, shallow tin.
- Leave at room temperature for an hour, until the bar is fully solid.
- Rub the bar over dry patches, then smooth it in with your hands.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tbsp cocoa butter
- Cocoa butter is hard at room temperature and melts at body heat, which is exactly the behaviour a lotion bar needs.
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets
- Beeswax holds the bar's shape and leaves a light protective film that stays put on hands and heels.
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil
- The liquid oil stops the bar setting brick hard and carries the butter across the skin as it melts.
Easy swaps
- 1 tbsp cocoa butter → shea butter for a softer bar with a milder smell.
- 1 tbsp beeswax pellets → candelilla wax at two thirds the amount for a vegan bar.
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil → olive, almond or rice bran oil, whichever is in the cupboard.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps about six months wrapped in paper in a cool, dark cupboard. It softens above roughly 25 degrees, so keep it out of a sunny bathroom.
What to expect — honestly
Rough patches feel smoother and look less chalky for several hours. It is a barrier sitting on top of the skin rather than a repair, and it will not do what a pharmacy ointment does for genuinely cracked heels. It leaves a slight sheen and can mark fabric.
Common questions
Why is my bar too hard?
There is too much beeswax for the room you use it in. Remelt it with an extra teaspoon of sunflower oil and it will glide much more easily.
Can I use it on my face?
It is heavy for facial skin, though plenty of people use a thin smear on dry lips and cheeks in winter. Start small and see how it settles.
