Small Hours Eye Cooler — homemade facial rituals & serum ingredients styled for the recipe

You will need

The ritual

  1. Whisk the chilled cucumber juice and aloe vera gel together in a small dish.
  2. Soak the two cotton pads until they are heavy but not dripping.
  3. Lie back, close your eyes, and rest one pad on each closed lid.
  4. Leave them ten minutes, or until they lose their chill.
  5. Lift them off, pat the area dry, and let the skin settle.
Glow tip ✦ Grate half a cucumber, squeeze the juice through a sieve, and keep it in a jar in the fridge for the week's shifts.

Why these ingredients

2 tbsp chilled cucumber juice
Watery and cold, it carries the chill that does most of the work here and feels pleasant on tired lids.
1 tsp aloe vera gel
Thickens the juice so the pads stay wet rather than dripping down your temples, and adds a light cooling slip.
2 cotton pads
Hold the liquid in place on closed lids and stop you rubbing at the eye area with your fingers.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Mix fresh. Cucumber juice is water with no preservative, so keep it covered in the fridge and use it within two days.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on the inner wrist, particularly if aloe or cucumber is new to you. Nothing goes in the eye; the pads rest on closed lids only. Lift them off at once if anything stings, and take contact lenses out first.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Under-eyes look less swollen and feel cooler for an hour or two, which is genuinely useful at 4am. It is a temperature trick and nothing more. Dark circles, fine lines and the general toll of night work are unchanged by it.

Common questions

Will this get rid of my dark circles?

No. The cool helps with puffiness and makes the area look fresher for an hour or two. Colouring under the eyes is mostly structure and genetics, which pads do not change.

Cucumber slices or juice?

Slices work and are less faff. Juice with aloe in it holds the cold a little longer and covers the whole socket rather than just the middle.
