Red-Eye Flight Sleeping Mask
A rich balm to sleep in on an overnight flight: shea butter seals the surface, honey holds a little water underneath it, and aloe vera gel keeps the whole thing from feeling heavy.

You will need
- 1 tbsp shea butter
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
The ritual
- Soften the shea butter in a small bowl set over warm water.
- Whisk in the honey until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
- Beat in the aloe vera gel a little at a time so it emulsifies.
- Decant into a small screw-top tin and pack it in your hand luggage.
- After the meal service, wash your face and press on a thin layer before sleeping.
Why these ingredients
- 1 tbsp shea butter
- Shea sits on the surface and slows water leaving the skin, which is exactly what dry cabin air spends hours doing.
- 1 tsp honey
- A teaspoon draws a little moisture into the top layer and keeps the balm from feeling purely greasy.
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- Aloe lightens the texture so it spreads thinly, and gives the balm a cooler feel on a warm face.
Easy swaps
- 1 tbsp shea butter → cocoa butter, firmer and with its own chocolate smell.
- 1 tsp honey → vegetable glycerine, if you would rather avoid bee products.
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel → a few drops of jojoba oil, though the balm will be richer.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps three months in a sealed tin at room temperature. Shea goes grainy if it warms and cools repeatedly, which affects the texture but not the use.
What to expect — honestly
You will land with skin that feels softer and less papery than it otherwise would. It is a barrier against dry air, nothing more. It will not undo a night of bad sleep, and your face will still look like it took a red-eye.
Common questions
Does it need washing off?
Rinse it in the morning with warm water and a flannel. Shea does not absorb entirely, and you will not want it under a fresh face.
Can it go in the hold?
Take it in hand luggage. A tin in the hold can chill hard or warm right through, and shea that melts and resets goes gritty.
