Overnight Clay Spot Paste

A tiny dot of paste for a single spot overnight: green clay dries down matte and absorbent, witch hazel loosens it into a paste, and aloe vera gel keeps it from cracking too hard.

Overnight Clay Spot Paste — homemade facial rituals & serum ingredients styled for the recipe

You will need

The ritual

  1. Mix the clay and witch hazel in a small dish with a wooden cocktail stick.
  2. Stir in the aloe vera gel until you have a thick, spreadable paste.
  3. Dot it onto the spot only, using the stick rather than your finger.
  4. Leave it overnight on a pillow you do not mind marking slightly.
  5. Rinse off with lukewarm water in the morning and moisturise as usual.
Glow tip ✦ Keep the dot smaller than the spot itself. Clay spread over the skin around it just leaves a dry, flaky patch by morning.

Why these ingredients

1/2 tsp French green clay
Green clay is highly absorbent and dries down matte, so an oily spot looks considerably less shiny by morning.
1/2 tsp witch hazel
Witch hazel wets the clay into a workable paste and leaves a clean, slightly astringent feel on the skin.
1/4 tsp aloe vera gel
Aloe softens the mix so it dries to a firm dot rather than cracking off onto your pillow overnight.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Single use — mix a fresh dot each night. Clay and water left standing separate and grow things within a couple of days.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your jawline first. Do not use it on broken, picked or bleeding skin, and keep it well away from your eyes and lips. If it stings, or leaves the area red and flaky, wash it off and give the skin a rest.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

By morning the spot usually looks flatter and less shiny, and the area is easier to cover. That is oil absorption and nothing more. It will not clear a breakout or do what a dermatologist's treatment does.

Common questions

Does this get rid of spots?

No. It takes up surface oil so the spot looks flatter and less shiny by morning. Persistent spots are a job for a pharmacist or a GP.

Can I leave it on all day instead?

Overnight is kinder. Under makeup it flakes, and clay left on dry skin for hours will leave the whole area tight and irritated.
