Cool Clay Foot Mask
A cold grey mask for the end of a shift: kaolin clay sits cool on the skin, witch hazel gives a tightened feel as it dries, and peppermint tea adds a clean chill.

You will need
- 2 tbsp kaolin clay
- 1 tbsp witch hazel
- 1 tbsp cooled peppermint tea
The ritual
- Whisk the kaolin clay with the witch hazel and cooled peppermint tea.
- Chill the bowl in the fridge for five minutes if you want it colder.
- Paint a thick layer over the tops and soles of clean, dry feet.
- Rest with your feet up for twelve minutes, until the clay looks matte.
- Rinse off in the shower or a basin, then dry carefully between the toes.
Why these ingredients
- 2 tbsp kaolin clay
- The mildest of the clays, it sits cool and dries to a matte layer without pulling as hard as bentonite does.
- 1 tbsp witch hazel
- Loosens the clay into a paintable paste and leaves a brisk, tightened feel on the skin as everything dries.
- 1 tbsp cooled peppermint tea
- Adds a clean chill without the risk of neat peppermint oil, which is far too strong to put straight on skin.
Easy swaps
- 2 tbsp kaolin clay → French green clay for something stronger, or rhassoul for something silkier.
- 1 tbsp witch hazel → cooled green tea if witch hazel leaves your skin feeling too tight.
- 1 tbsp cooled peppermint tea → cooled spearmint or plain chamomile tea.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Single use. Clay mixed with tea has no preservative and will not keep, so make only as much as you need.
What to expect — honestly
Feet feel cool and less heavy for an hour or two after a long shift, which on a bad day is enough. That tight feeling is the clay drying, not the skin changing. Nothing here does anything for swelling that has a medical cause.
Common questions
Can I stand up with it on?
Better not to. Wet clay is slippery underfoot and dripping onto a hard floor makes it worse. Sit down with your feet on a towel instead.
Why not use peppermint essential oil?
Tea gives a gentler cool without the risk of an oil going on neat. If you do use oil, one drop stirred into a teaspoon of carrier is plenty.
