You will need

The ritual

  1. Whisk the buckwheat flour, oats and powdered milk together in a dry bowl.
  2. Sieve the mix once so no coarse oat pieces are left behind.
  3. Store in a small jar and keep a dry teaspoon beside it.
  4. Tip half a teaspoon into a wet palm, add water, and rub to a loose paste.
  5. Massage over damp skin for twenty seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Glow tip ✦ Never let a wet finger into the jar. Water in dry grains turns the whole batch into a solid, mouldy lump within days.

Why these ingredients

3 tbsp buckwheat flour
A soft, slightly nutty flour that turns to a smooth paste with water and carries grime and oil off the skin.
1 tbsp fine oats
Oats make the wash feel cushioned and soothing, and stop the buckwheat from feeling tight as it dries on the skin.
1 tbsp powdered milk
Milk powder adds a little fat and protein, so skin feels soft afterwards instead of squeaky and bare.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Keeps three months dry and sealed. Because it contains milk powder, discard it at once if it ever smells sour or starts to clump.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your jaw first. Skip the milk powder if dairy irritates your skin, and skip the oats if you react to them. Keep the grains out of your eyes and rinse well if any get in.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Skin looks clean and feels smooth, without the tightness a foaming cleanser can leave behind. It is a gentle daily wash and no more than that. It will not clear congestion or change your skin's texture over weeks.

Common questions

Is this a scrub?

Barely. The grains are soft and rounded, so it sits closer to a gentle wash than a scrub, and it will not leave skin feeling scraped.

Can I mix a batch with water in advance?

No. Wet grains ferment within a day or two. Mixing a pinch in your palm each time is the whole reason for keeping the jar dry.
