You will need

The ritual

  1. Rinse the rice once, then leave it to soak in the water for thirty minutes.
  2. Swirl the grains, strain the cloudy water into a jug and cook the rice as normal.
  3. Stir the rosemary oil into the aloe vera gel first, then whisk that into the rice water.
  4. After shampooing, pour it slowly over your hair and work it through the lengths for a minute.
  5. Rinse out thoroughly with cool water, then condition as usual.
Glow tip ✦ Do not leave rice water sitting on your hair for an hour, because too much protein coating makes the shaft stiff and prone to snapping.

Why these ingredients

1/2 cup rice
Releases starch and a little protein into the water, which is what leaves a smooth coating along the hair shaft after rinsing.
2 cups water
The extraction medium and the dilution. Any more concentrated and the rinse dries stiff, dulling the hair rather than smoothing it.
1 tbsp aloe vera gel
Softens that starchy feel and adds slip, so a comb goes through the lengths afterwards without catching and tugging.
2 drops rosemary oil
A small amount of scent that gives the scalp a light tingle during the massage. It is not doing anything more than that.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Use it the same day, or keep it in the fridge for two days at most. It is starchy water with nothing preserving it and it sours quickly.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your inner elbow, since the rosemary oil is the likely sensitiser here. Leave the rosemary oil out entirely if you are pregnant, if you have epilepsy, or if this is for a child. Keep the rinse well away from your eyes.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Hair usually feels denser and looks glossier once dry, and detangling is easier for a few washes. The effect is a coating on the outside of the hair, so it washes away over time. It does not make hair grow faster and it cannot mend a split end.

Common questions

Should I ferment the rice water first?

You can leave it out for a day, but fermented rice water smells sour and is far more likely to irritate a sensitive scalp. Plain works perfectly well.

How often should I use it?

Once a week is plenty for most hair. Fine or already protein heavy hair does better fortnightly, since too much protein leaves the lengths brittle.
