Aloe Flaxseed Hair Gel
A cooked styling gel: flaxseeds give slippery hold with no crunch, aloe keeps the set flexible through the day, and argan oil stops the dried gel looking papery.

You will need
- 2 tbsp flaxseeds
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 1 tsp argan oil
The ritual
- Simmer the flaxseeds in the water for about eight minutes, stirring often.
- Watch for a trail of egg-white slime off the spoon, then take it off.
- Strain immediately through a fine sieve while it is still hot and pourable.
- Cool to lukewarm, then whisk in the aloe gel and argan oil.
- Rake through damp hair with your fingers, scrunch, and leave it to dry.
Why these ingredients
- 2 tbsp flaxseeds
- The whole point. Simmered seeds release a slippery gel that holds a curl without setting hard or flaking out later.
- 1 cup water
- The cooking medium, and it decides the final thickness. Less water gives a firmer hold, more gives a softer one.
- 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
- Keeps the set flexible so hair still moves, and adds slip when you rake the gel through damp lengths.
- 1 tsp argan oil
- A small amount of oil stops the dried gel looking dull or feeling papery on the ends.
Easy swaps
- 2 tbsp flaxseeds → chia seeds, though the gel is thinner and much harder to strain.
- 1 cup water → strong cooled green tea for a slightly firmer hold.
- 1 tbsp aloe vera gel → a teaspoon of vegetable glycerin, but go easy in humid weather.
- 1 tsp argan oil → jojoba, or a few drops of grapeseed oil.
Keep it clean
Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.
Storage & when to let go
Keeps about a week in the fridge in a lidded jar. It is mostly water with nothing to preserve it, so bin it at the first sour smell.
What to expect — honestly
Hair holds its shape with movement, frizz sits down, and there is no crunchy cast to break up afterwards. The hold is light, so it will not survive rain or a windy walk home. This is styling for the day, not a change in the hair itself.
Common questions
Mine came out too thick.
Whisk in a spoonful of warm water at a time until it pours again. Simmering a minute too long is the usual cause, so pull it earlier next time.
Can I freeze it?
Yes, in an ice cube tray. Defrost a cube in the fridge overnight and whisk it smooth again, and you get a month instead of a week.
