Central Heating Comfort Mist

A desk-side mist for paper-dry rooms: rosewater does the smelling and most of the volume, distilled water thins it, and glycerine leaves skin softened rather than briefly wet.

You will need

The ritual

  1. Pour the rosewater and distilled water into a small clean spray bottle.
  2. Add the glycerine, cap the bottle, and shake for ten seconds.
  3. Close your eyes and mist your face from about twenty centimetres away.
  4. Press what lands in with your palms rather than letting it dry off.
  5. Shake before each use and keep the bottle on your desk.
Glow tip ✦ Press the mist in with your palms while it is still wet. Left to dry on its own, a mist takes more water off than it leaves.

Why these ingredients

3 tbsp rosewater
Rosewater is the body and the smell of it, and a real rose distillate makes two spritzes worth stopping for.
1 tbsp distilled water
Distilled water thins the rosewater slightly and keeps the mist from clouding after a few days on the desk.
1 tsp vegetable glycerine
Glycerine is the only ingredient here that actually holds water at the surface once the spray has evaporated.

Easy swaps

Keep it clean

Mix with freshly washed hands and clean, dry bowls and spoons. If a recipe is stored, use a jar or bottle washed in hot soapy water and dried completely, and never dip wet fingers into the batch.

Storage & when to let go

Keeps two weeks at room temperature, or a month in the fridge. It is water with no preservative, so mix small amounts and rinse the bottle between batches.

Allergy check ✦ Patch test on your inner arm first. Use a plain rosewater with no added alcohol or fragrance. Keep it out of the eyes, and shut them while you spray.
Patch-test first ✦ Apply a little of the finished mix to your inner arm and wait 24 hours. No reaction is a good sign, though no patch test can rule out every reaction. Never use a recipe on broken or irritated skin, keep everything out of your eyes, and stop at once if anything stings or burns.

What to expect — honestly

Two seconds of cool damp and a rose smell, and skin that feels softer for the next half hour if you press it in. It will not out-argue a radiator. A bowl of water on the heater does more for the room than the mist does for your face.

Common questions

Does it work over makeup?

Yes, if you mist lightly from a distance and let it settle rather than pressing it in. A heavy spray will move foundation about.

Can I use tap water?

You can, though hard water leaves a faint film and chlorinated water smells of it. Distilled or bottled still water keeps the mist cleaner for longer.
